MIDRP Overview History & Achievements Current Research Efforts External Programs

Program Overview:
The capability of physicians and commanders to accurately diagnose and recognize infectious disease threats in an operational environment is a high priority. The research conducted under this program will identify platforms and assays capable of providing this information. These assays should be FDA approved for clinical specimens and meet pre-defined criteria for operational utility. Therefore the goals of this Program Area are to a) Conduct basic research that yields candidate diagnostic assays for militarily relevant diseases, b) Development of a data package that defines each individual assay and characterizes its performance, c) Use of this data package to down-select the most promising candidate assays for further development, d) Conduct studies that will yield the data required for the preparation and submission of a 510(k) application for each down-selected assay, e) Yield FDA-cleared diagnostic devices for militarily relevant pathogens available to support military operations.
